Charles Hollandsworth, Jr.

Charles Hollandsworth, Jr. passed peacefully on January 1, 2017, at The Living Centre in Stevensville, Montana. He was born September 25, 1918, in Des Moines, Iowa to Charles and Minnie Pruitt Hollandsworth and was the youngest of four children. Charles lost his mother five weeks later to the Spanish flu. He was raised by his siblings, father, aunts and uncles, and lived in Colorado on a ranch most of his young life. During the Great Depression, Charles joined the Conservation Corps and supported his family. He moved to California in 1934 and worked on ranches and farms until he joined the Marine Corps in 1939. Charles was a young MP at the gate at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7th, 1941. He saw the planes come in low and was strafed by machine gun fire. As a Marine Staff Sergeant, Charles fought in four Pacific theaters, Guam, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He operated heavy armored equipment pushing down pill boxes and barriers for the ground troops. Charles married Johnnie Shepard, the love of his life, in 1942, in California while on leave. They were married thirty-six years before she deceased. He later married Wanda Shirley in 1979. They moved to Montana in 1980. She deceased in 1998. Charles worked for Pacific Gas and Electric for thirty-two years. He became a demolition foreman and was injured in a cave-in, breaking his back, in 1971 while checking a charge in a trench. He was forced to retire two years later. Charles enjoyed his home, carpentry, gardening, his livestock and his dogs. He was social and liked to entertain with his harmonica at family get togethers. He especially enjoyed his friends at Stevensville Senior Center in his later years. A very special "thank you" to all the staff at The Living Centre for the loving care and the home that Charles experienced for the last four and a half years. Also, a "thank you" to Dr. Gilbert for his good care and conversation and to Rocky Mountain Hospice. Charles is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Hoffman, Stevensville, his grandson, Mark Hoffman, Chico, California, and two great granddaughters, Ashton and Caroline, Paradise, California, as well as nieces and nephews who loved their "Uncle Charlie". A Celebration of Charles' life is planned for late July at Dos Pasos Ranch.
