Paul Eugene Hollingsworth

COLUMBIA - Paul Eugene Hollingsworth, 81, passed away Sunday, November 14, 2010, in Palmetto Health Baptist Medical Center. Born January 21, 1929, in Melcher, Iowa, he was a son of the late Paul Edward and Minnie Evans Hollingsworth. Paul proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Jackson. Upon returning from service overseas he met Betty Jane Coogler at the U.S.O. Club. They were married in 1949 and remained committed to each other for 61 wonderful years; only death could separate them.
Professionally, Paul was employed with Colonial Life for 28 years, where he held the position of Vice President of the Life Department. He completed his professional career in the real estate market in the Columbia area. He was respected by both his peers and clients for his forthright and fair business practices. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed hunting and was an enthusiastic spectator of his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. Also, Paul was an active member of Incarnation Lutheran Church where he served on church council and various committees.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Betty Jane Coogler; sons, Tommy Hollingsworth (Leah), Bradley Hollingsworth, all of Columbia; brothers, Larry Hollingsworth (Lynda) of Lexington Park, Md., Gerald Hollingsworth (Karol) of Des Moines, Iowa; sister, Margaret Hollingsworth of Moline, Illinois; grandchildren, Gracie, Bradley Jr., Thomas and Lindsay Hollingsworth; niece, Cheri Coppens (Daniel) of Columbia; nephew, Mitchell Marcus of Atlanta; father-in-law, John T. Watkins of Columbia.
Funeral service is 1 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010, at Incarnation Lutheran Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Mary W. Anderson, Rev. Dr. David A. Donges (retired Bishop S.C. Synod) and Rev. Dr. James C. Parham III. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
